Choosing the airport

Salvador or Ilhéus: which airport to choose

The difference between the two airports isn't about comfort: it is half a day of travel. Ilhéus is about 2 hours from the port of Camamu; Salvador, 5 or 6. This guide shows when each one pays off — before the ticket is bought.

It compares the two airports by distance, real travel time and type of trip. It doesn't compare airfares, which change every day and which you can check better than any web page.

The destination is the same from either airport. What changes is how much of the trip happens before you get here.

The quick answer

Ilhéus saves half a day. Salvador saves a layover.

Ilhéus is about 115 km from the port of Camamu, roughly 2 hours by road. Salvador is about 195 km away via the ferry route, which in practice means 5 to 6 hours to the same port. The difference between the two is, quite literally, half a day of travel.

If there is a convenient flight to Ilhéus, it almost always wins. The catch is availability: IOS has few daily flights and practically no direct international connections. When a flight to Ilhéus doesn't exist, costs too much or forces a bad connection, Salvador becomes the right way in.

The costly mistake isn't picking the wrong airport — it is picking the wrong time. A late-afternoon landing in Salvador won't make the last boat in Camamu, and that turns a one-day trip into two.

Side by side

The two airports, by the same criteria

Planning references to the port of Camamu, before the boat crossing. Times vary with traffic, the ferry line and road conditions.
Airport Distance to Camamu Reference time When it pays off
Ilhéus (IOS) ~115 km, almost all paved ~2h by road Whenever there is a flight at a convenient time. It is the shortest route with the fewest points of delay.
Salvador (SSA) ~195 km via the Itaparica ferry 5 to 6h counting the ferry, the wait and the drive When flight availability decides: an international connection, a better time or a departure city with no direct flight to Ilhéus.

Scenario A

When Ilhéus makes more sense

Ilhéus is the natural gateway to the Maraú Peninsula. The airport is small, deplaning is quick and the stretch to Camamu is short enough to fit comfortably into one travel day.

  • There is a flight landing in the morning or by early afternoon.
  • Your final destination is Barra Grande, Taipu de Fora or a guesthouse on the peninsula.
  • You want fewer stages where something can run late.
  • You are traveling with small children, and cutting 4 hours of driving changes the whole day.
  • Your return flight leaves at a time that allows a comfortable buffer for the crossing.

The full route, from arrivals to the pier, is in the guide to arriving via IOS.

Scenario B

When Salvador makes more sense

Salvador isn't the shortest choice, but it is often the only workable one — and on some itineraries it is clearly the best.

  • You are arriving on an international flight or from a city with no direct link to Ilhéus.
  • Your trip already starts in the capital, with a hotel, a commitment or days in Salvador.
  • Your itinerary includes other coastal destinations along the way.
  • The difference in airfare is large enough to justify the extra hours.
  • The group is large and the seats available to Ilhéus can't fit everyone on one flight.
Heads-up The Salvador route includes the ferry from São Joaquim to Bom Despacho, with its own lines and schedule. On holidays and in high season, that wait is the biggest source of unpredictability on the trip — and it comes right at the start, with more than 4 hours of driving still ahead.

The math that matters

Airfare vs. travel time

Comparing only the ticket price hides half the cost. A cheaper flight to Salvador adds 3 to 4 hours of travel compared with Ilhéus — and those hours have a price, even if it doesn't show up in the flight search.

What to add up before deciding

  • The longer transfer, which costs more than the short run from Ilhéus.
  • The ferry crossing and the time spent waiting in line.
  • The risk of missing the last boat, which can turn into a hotel night along the way.
  • The travel day itself, which comes out of your vacation and doesn't come back.

And on the way back

The return is stricter than the way in, because it ends at a fixed time. Leaving Barra Grande, you add up the crossing, the drive and the check-in time — and a delay on the bay can't be made up on the highway. For a flight out of Salvador, that math may mean leaving the peninsula the day before.

Good to know If you still have two flight options open, send both before you buy. Checking landing times against the boat schedule takes minutes and avoids the most expensive mistake on this trip.

Common questions

What travelers ask most about this part of the trip

Is Ilhéus always better than Salvador?
No. Ilhéus is much closer — about 115 km to Camamu versus roughly 195 km from Salvador via the ferry — but it has few flights a day and almost no international connections. When there is no convenient flight to Ilhéus, Salvador becomes the practical choice.
How far is Salvador from Barra Grande?
Taking the ferry from São Joaquim to Bom Despacho, on Itaparica Island, it is about 195 km to Camamu. Adding up the ferry, the wait and the drive, the trip to the port usually takes 5 to 6 hours, before the boat crossing even starts.
How far is Ilhéus from Barra Grande?
About 127 km in total. That is roughly 115 km of paved road to the port of Camamu, around 2 hours, plus a 30 to 40 minute boat crossing over the bay.
Does Salvador take more planning?
It does. The route includes the ferry to Itaparica, which has its own lines and schedule, and a much longer drive. That means more points where a delay can build up until it puts the last boat of the day in Camamu at risk.
Should I buy my flight before checking the arrival?
Better not. What decides whether the day works isn't the airfare, it is your landing time compared with the last boat out of Camamu. A cheap flight that lands in Salvador at 4 p.m. can cost you an extra hotel night along the way.
Can I get there the same day from Salvador?
Yes, as long as you land in the morning or early afternoon. With 5 to 6 hours to Camamu plus the crossing, a flight arriving in the late afternoon rarely makes the last boat, and the arrival ends up as a night drive on the road route or an overnight stop along the way.
Can the transfer start from either airport?
Yes. There are routes from Salvador and from Ilhéus, with the vehicle sized to your passengers, luggage and schedule.

How this guide is maintained

This guide describes the general logistics of arriving in Barra Grande and on the Maraú Peninsula. Distances, times and stages are planning references, not guaranteed schedules: tides, rain, road conditions and same-day availability all change the actual trip. Nothing here replaces confirming your own transfer before you travel.
