The quick answer

Two hours of highway and half an hour by boat

From Jorge Amado Airport (IOS) to Barra Grande is about 127 km. The usual route is roughly 115 km of paved road to the port of Camamu, around 2 hours, followed by a 30 to 40 minute boat crossing over Camamu Bay.

It is the shortest and most predictable route for anyone flying to the Maraú Peninsula. The airport is small, deplaning is quick and the drive is almost entirely paved — three things that matter when the day ends with a crossing on a limited schedule.

The alternative is to skip the boat and continue overland to the peninsula, which swaps the crossing for about 46 km of dirt road and brings the total to 3h30 to 4 hours.

Stage 1

At arrivals

Jorge Amado Airport has a single terminal and a small arrivals hall. In practice, that is an advantage: there is no way to get lost, and you meet your driver within minutes.

The exact meeting point is agreed beforehand on WhatsApp, along with your flight number. That detail isn't red tape: with the flight number, the pickup team tracks delays in real time and recalculates the crossing before you even land.

Good to know If you check a bag, count the wait at the carousel as part of your buffer. On full flights, that interval is what decides whether a boat departure is still within reach.

Stage 2

The drive

From Ilhéus to Camamu is about 115 km, roughly 2 hours. The route follows the southern coast of Bahia, passes the Itacaré area and joins the BR-030 into the town of Camamu.

It is paved and technically easy, but it isn't a fast highway: there are curves, hilly stretches and small towns to drive through. Two hours is a realistic reference, not an optimistic one.

What usually changes that time

  • Heavy rain, which lowers the average speed along the whole way.
  • Roadwork and maintenance zones, which are common on the BR-030.
  • Requested stops — restroom, snacks, pharmacy — which easily add 20 to 30 minutes.

Stopping in Itacaré? The route passes nearby, and the stop can be arranged as part of the transfer.

Stage 3

The crossing

In Camamu you swap the car for the boat. The crossing of the bay to the Barra Grande pier takes 30 to 40 minutes on average by speedboat.

Departures usually run every hour, roughly from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., but that varies by the day, by operator and with sea conditions. The last departure is the real cutoff for the day: miss it, and the options are the dirt road or a night in Camamu.

Camamu has more than one dock, and going to the wrong one costs exactly the time this stage doesn't have. The boat crossing guide explains how each boarding point works.

Heads-up Flights that land in Ilhéus in the late afternoon rarely make the last boat of the day. If your flight arrives after 3 p.m., check that the connection works before you buy the ticket.

Stage 4

Luggage and groups

The crossing adds a luggage transfer in the middle of the trip: everything comes out of the trunk, goes onto the boat and is unloaded at the pier. None of it is complicated, but it has to be planned in advance — and it is the information most often missing from first messages.

What to tell us beforehand

  • Number of passengers and how many large suitcases the group is bringing.
  • Surfboards, kayaks or other long gear, which need dedicated space on the boat.
  • Babies or small children, so a car seat is ready for the drive and a life jacket for the boat.
  • Wheelchairs or reduced mobility, because boarding at the pier requires assistance.

After the Barra Grande pier there is still the local leg to your guesthouse. If you are headed to Taipu de Fora, Cassange or another beach farther south, that leg is longer and is quoted as a stage of its own.

Common questions

What travelers ask most about this part of the trip

How far is Ilhéus Airport from Barra Grande?
About 127 km in total. The paved stretch to the port of Camamu is roughly 115 km and takes close to 2 hours; the boat crossing over Camamu Bay completes the trip in another 30 to 40 minutes.
How long does it take to get from Ilhéus Airport to Barra Grande?
With the boat crossing, around 2h30 to 3 hours, counting the drive, the wait at the port and the boat. By the all-road route, 3h30 to 4 hours, and longer if it has rained — the final stretch of the BR-030 is dirt road.
Will the driver meet me at the airport?
Yes. The meeting point at arrivals is agreed in advance on WhatsApp, along with your flight number, so the pickup can follow any change in your arrival time.
What should I do if my flight is delayed?
Let us know in the same WhatsApp conversation as soon as you find out. A delay changes the math for the crossing: if the new time won't make the last boats of the day, the route has to switch to the road or the arrival has to be rearranged.
Does the route always go through Camamu?
No. Camamu is the most common way because it shortens the trip a lot, but there is an all-road alternative via the BR-030, with about 46 km of dirt road on the final stretch. It is considered when the timing doesn't allow the crossing or when the group would rather not change vehicles.
Do I need extra time on the way back to the airport?
Yes, and more than on the way in. On the return, the crossing, the drive and the check-in time all add up, and any delay on the bay can't be made up on the highway. Plan your departure from Barra Grande with a real buffer.
